New Real Oviedo Head Coach Javi Calleja was officially presented this morning. Club President Martín Peláez and the coach made their way through the streets of the city to the Leyenda del Gallo, the bar where the press conference took place.
The renovation work being done at the Carlos Tartiere prevented the presentation from taking place in the Press Room at the stadium, as would be the norm. The new coaching staff for Real Oviedo were excited to arrive at Oviedo and answered questions from the media present at the press conference.
When asked about his vision for the team, Calleja said: “I want a brave, attacking team, that wants the ball, with a clear identity. Above all, I want us to believe that we are capable of winning on any pitch and against any opponent”.
Santi Cazorla’s influence transcends the purely footballing aspect and the new coach was also asked about it. “Santi has been key. I’ve known him for many years. Imagine the words he has for Oviedo. He has been key to my being here”.
Speaking about Real Oviedo and its fans, Calleja said: “I’ve experienced what the playoffs were like, and it gave me goosebumps. I want to repay their confidence by winning”.
In the words of Real Oviedo’s coach, his style of play is defined as follows: “We don’t want to depend on the opponent. We want to have the ball and depend on ourselves. The coaches who have been here have their own styles, I have mine”.
To finish, the coach was asked about the past difficulty of winning the first matches of the season, Calleja stated: “We have to break with the statistics from the start of the season. Teams with a lot of history have come up. We have to be aware that to be up at the top of the table, our work has to be the best right from the beginning of the season. In my opinion, it’s the best second division I’ve ever known”.
