Real Oviedo bid farewell to the 2020-21 season today at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López against Tenerife. Ziganda opted to make several changes from the previous match at the NMR Carlos Tartiere, although some were enforced through suspension. VAR was ultimately to deny the Asturians the chance to bring the season to an end with a victory, after they had taken the lead early on.
Things started well for Los Carbayones, with Borja Sánchez making the score 1-0 to Real Oviedo in the seventh minute, meeting Sangalli's pass with a fine strike from the edge of the box. After the goal the hosts began to enjoy the better of the chances. Fran Sol had a goal disallowed for offside, while Tenerife's attempts to equalise also saw them hit the post and force Femenías into a fine save. Borja Valle fired a powerful shot wide from distance, before Blanco Leschuk headed wide from a right-wing cross in the best chance of the first half for Ziganda's side.
After the halftime interval VAR awarded a penalty to Tenerife, allowing Fran Sol to level the scores from the spot. Real Oviedo responded with a venomous left-footed volley from Jimmy, but the home keeper plucked the ball out of the top corner. Blanco Leschuk had another chance after meeting a ball in from the left, but he was also denied by the goalkeeper. The referee then received another VAR call, and gave Tenerife another penalty, with Suso Santana converting this time. Following several attacks from Los Azules, Blanco Leschuk finally managed to score an equalising goal for Real Oviedo in stoppage time, making the final score 2-2. Alex Cardero and Sandoval came on in the final minutes for their first-team debuts.
Real Oviedo end the season on 52 points, and we are awaiting results from elsewhere on the final matchday to determine our final league position.
